If you’re well on your way to figuring out how to run a successful live event in your business, then go on with your bad self and make that happen.
But, if you want to learn from someone who’s already figured it out, then stick with me, I’ll share with you what I’ve learned. Over the last 18 years, I’ve created some incredible events for my clients.
I didn’t always know how to produce an event. I didn’t work for someone else doing events before I started my business.
The first event I ever did was a fashion show in the local pub (in my small home town). It was a bit of fun and a huge adrenaline rush.
Fast forward a few years. I had the privilege of hosting a business development conference with a few of my colleagues. That conference was one of the catalysts for me starting my own business and I had to figure it out along the way.
I’ve done all the figuring out, so you don’t have to. Save yourself the many years of trial and error and long nights to figure out where to start and what comes next.
Events aren’t one of those things you deliver many times a year. You may only do one or two a year so the learning from each can take years to refine. And who’s got time for that these days?
You want to know what you’re going to do, and that your business is going to be successful and make money – am I right!
So how do you know when your business is big enough, or ready enough to host an event?
You know what, there’s no right or wrong size. It only takes a small group of people to host a successful and profitable event. In saying that, the key to a successful event is to make sure you’ve got the right people in the room.
If you get 50 people to your event, but only 25 are your ideal customers; your event isn’t going to be any more successful than if you only had 25 in the first place. In fact, it will cost you more.
Don’t think you have to have a huge email list or have been in business for many years to host an event.
The truth – having an event strategy in your business from the get-go will allow you to grow your event as you grow your business.
Hosting an event will be who you are in your business. You can do hard things because everything is figureoutable. Yes, I’m totally taking a cue from Marie Forleo!
I know, there are so many things to think about when you’re starting and growing your business. An event is the last thing you want to add to the mix because you don’t think you’ve got the time, resources or knowledge.
Let me tell you, events grow businesses!
Your goal in business is to build the know, like, trust factor so people feel confident buying from you – right! What better way to fast track this than with an event?
You don’t have to go all-in and host a three-day conference or a retreat – although you could, and it’s easier than you think.
You can start with a four-hour workshop. You could host a few of these to begin with. Find your groove by delivering your content in front of an audience. What you’ll learn in a short space of time will be phenomenal.
I know you know that you need to have a live event in your business, and NOW is the best time to do it.

I’ve used this framework to deliver event after event for my clients with raving success. This works for different size businesses, in different sectors, with different objectives.
The biggest mistake I’ve seen over the years is when people want to start at step three. Then go back to step two but struggle with step four because they didn’t put enough work into the event at step one.
You don’t want to spend your first three or four events working out that this is where you went wrong. It’s highly likely that you’ll give up after your first one or two events because it’s all too hard. You didn’t get the results you wanted despite the hours of blood, sweat, and tears you invested.
Regardless of what you’re trying to figure out, it’s about how resourceful you’re prepared to be – how determined you are, and your level of persistence.
